野枝コラム ミイラとサイプレス、問われる死生観

サイプレスが教えてくれる、人生の輝き。

国立科学博物館で、特別展「ミイラ」が開催中です。

ミイラを通して見えてくる、国や時代を超えた、死後の世界に対する考え方。
「死」と向き合うことではっきりと感じる、自分の「生」。
自分自身の死生観、人生を全うすることの意味を問われた気がしました。

ふと、アロマの世界で「生」と「死」を考えたとき、サイプレスが思い浮かびました。

サイプレスの学名にある “sempervirens” は、ラテン語で＜永遠に生きる＞という意味。
サイプレス（糸杉）は＜死者を守る木＞として、地中海沿岸諸国で墓地のまわりにたくさん植えられています。
ギリシャ神話やローマ神話でも、冥界や死と関わりのある場面で糸杉が登場します。
イエス・キリストの磔刑の際に用いられた木でもあるとか。

サイプレスには森の香りを代表する成分のひとつ、α-ピネンが多く含まれています。
古代ギリシアでは、＜健やかな呼吸＞のために、サイプレスを燻した煙を使用したとか。
アラビアでは、呼吸器に優しいサイプレスの森に、長期療養所を設けていた記録もあるそうです。

“生きることは、呼吸をすること。
「死」を意識するからこそ、人生は輝き出す。”

サイプレスから、そんなメッセージが聞こえてきそうです。

晩年のゴッホは、糸杉のことで頭がいっぱいだと語り、糸杉をテーマにした名画を数多く残しました。
ゴッホもきっと、サイプレスのそばで深呼吸をしていたのかもしれません。

Cypress trees have been planted around graves, or otherwise treated as a symbol of death and the underworld in Europe.
The cypress tree’s evergreen foliage can also be associated with life overcoming death.

Cypress essential oils contains α-pinene, which is one of the major components of phytoncides when you get “Forest bathing”.

Vincent van Gogh painted cypress trees and created his masterpieces such as “The Starry Night”.
I can’t help but imagine think of him taking a deep breath, inhaling the fragrance of the cypress tree.
